The Costa del Sol includes about 300km of the Spanish Mediterranean Coast and belongs to the Provinces of Granada, Malaga and Cadiz. Recently, the Granada Province coastline was re-designated as the ´Costa Tropical´.

The ´Costa Tropical´ enjoys a microclimate, subtropical in character - a warm and gentle 18 degrees in winter and averaging 28 degrees centigrade in summer. It is protected from the northern winds by a mountain chain which in some areas reaches down to the edge of the sea. With the intense blue of the Mediterranean, stunning beaches and idyllic shelter of the majestic countryside stretching from the Sierras of Alhama, Tejeda and Almijara towards the snow capped mountains of the Sierra Nevada, this is a place of unparalleled beauty.

We cover the coastline from La Herradura to Motril which has excellent access from Málaga airport (75km - approx one hour to Almuñécar). Salobreña is more popular with golfers playing the 9 holes “Los Moriscos” course close to the beach. Popular with residents and holidaymakers alike this year round course is planned to extend to 18 holes by the end of 2004. For sports enthusiasts, skiing in the Sierra Nevada is just 72km away whilst luxurious Marina Del Este nestling between La Herradura and Almuñécar offers sailing, scuba diving, water skiing, tennis and hang gliding. Delicious cuisine is served all day and most of the night at the quayside restaurants whilst the beaches and coves along this stretch are attractive and sheltered. Almuñécar lies in the shelter of the Castillo San Miguel, an impressive fortress developed by the Moors. Surrounded by more than 20 kilometres of beaches its most outstanding features are probably the winding streets in the old town, the Phoenician and Roman remains and a well preserved Roman aqueduct.

Fundamentally Spanish, despite a steady influx of cosmopolitans settling in the region, there is something for everyone, particularly children. Local schooling is superb but for those who would prefer to continue with the English school curriculum the International school based here in Almuñécar offers its cosmopolitan students education from 5 to 18. The school also provides an air-conditioned coach pick-up for all students from Nerja to Motril.

The motorway (E15/N340) stretching from Málaga airport to Nerja, completed in 2002, is currently being extended east passing behind Almuñécar and on towards Motril. With two planned exits to the east and west of the town access will be even easier.
